obligatory JD Salinger post
Honestly kids, I did not finish Catcher in the Rye. I mean it was fine but I try my best not to read fine books when there are so many unread incredible books out there (even if someone else thinks that what I thought was fine is really incredible).
That said, the man was a legend, and I’m glad to have lived on the same planet with him, at least for twenty-one and a little bit years. Rest...
But!
The abovementioned (belowmentioned?) tragedy stings a little bit less because I got the last spot in a beginning spindle class at Madrona. Rock.
ONE BEER:
was not enough to salve the pain of falling off my bike a few hours ago. I feel like absolute shit. So grateful I was wearing my helmet right now.
come ON people

1. Gather ingredients
2. Point gun at ingredients and shout “HOW DO I MAKE A SANDWICH OUT OF YOU?!?!?”
3. Breathe heavily through your nose as though you were about to hit ingredients
4. Give up and make the sandwich yourself, and eat it bitterly

Don’t tell me why it would “never happen to you”. ...

I hope it doesn’t, but statistics from UNIFEM say that one in five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime.
No matter how many times I have read it, this statistic will always be appalling to me. Men need to stop raping their fellow human beings.
Amen. It can happen to you.

just turned in my first poem for my advanced Poetry class. I am intimidated by this because, unlike most of my classmates, I do not consider myself a Poet but rather a Person Who Sometimes Writes Poetry. also intimidated because my professor, is, you know, no big deal, just the former Poet Laureate Of Tacoma. which totally deserves the capital-P.
yikes!
I’m not a wealthy person, and I’ve never been able to donate amounts...
– Mary-Heather, in a very eloquent post about the Help For Haiti Ravelry tag. She and other independent designers are donating much of their profits toward Haiti relief with the help of Ravelry. Mary-Heather quotes over $491 donated so far, and Ysolda’s number has topped $6000. Check out the...
Any person can make a mistake, but God makes life.
– The Rev. Dr. Leslie D. Braxton (pastor here) (UPS alum 1983)
In other words, his MLK day speech at my University tonight was wonderful. God is good, kids, All The Time.

I’d rather be able to enjoy my time with knitting than be like I am with my drawing and painting. Everytime I complete a piece of art, I look at it and hate it after five minutes because of all my mistakes. With knitting, it’s not like that. All I need to do is look at it and go, “YAY, I have something new to wear!”
Not sure what the point of the post is really, I just wanted to...

PS, if you ever choose to write something about the gender implications of craft vs. art, I look forward to reading it.
I’m considering writing about that for my gender thesis this semester, in fact!
I gave up patterns.

spundone:
Besides, I would NEVER consider using any kind of pattern or guide in any other art medium. Paint-by-numbers? Copy-and-paste.
I think this may be what separates the artists from the crafters.
I just think that when I see a beautifully made knitted object, the first thing I think is not ‘oh they used a pattern, crafters!’ but ‘wow! someone spent an incredible...
upon further examination,
That will never happen to me, because (a) I am not a warm, charming or friendly person and (b) there are no subways on this coast.

“Writing to ‘get it right the first time’ is like driving a car with the emergency brake on. In order to write more good stuff faster, and suffer less, you need to focus on removing the stalling, obsessing, and nitpicking from your composing process, and to think about a different kind of process.”

Knitters Without Borders →
You’ve probably heard of this organization, but if you haven’t, it’s headed up by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (our favorite Yarn Harlot). All money donated through KWB goes to Doctors Without Borders, which is fronting the disaster relief in Haiti. Please consider sending some love in the form of your weekly yarn budget.
I am a knitter. that means I knit. and knit and knit and knit.
